The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.
- Gordana Kajer, a BHCA Board Member and member of the Surfrider Foundation, gave a presentation about the Surfrider Foundation and its efforts to improve water quality along the ocean waterfront in Long Beach. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. More information on the organization can be found at http://www.lbsurfrider.org/. One of the major initiatives of the LB Chapter has involved pursuing the feasibility of reconfiguring the breakwater in order to improve water quality along the local beaches. The City Council approved a $100,000 reconnaisance study to determine the economic and other potential impacts of reconfiguring the breakwater. The City also chose an agent to perform the study but is awaiting funding of the $30,000 that the Army Corp of Engineering requires to review the study data. Of interest, were many old photos of local beaches with waves and surfers!
- Taylor Parker from the Friends of the Colorado Lagoon gave an excellent presentation addressing the scope and status of the restoration project for the Lagoon. He also spoke to the excellent education efforts and programs offered by FOCL staff. An overview of the restoration project, including maps and slides was provided. The project is now expected to begin the end of calendar year 2009. More information on the FOCL can be found at http://www.coloradolagoon.org/focl/home.html
- Maureen Neeley gave a brief update on the status of the "Neighborhood Stabilization" committee. Committee members are determining how best to proceed.
- Annual dues of approximately $1,155.00 have been received as a result of the newsletter mailing. Costs for mailing the newsletter were approximately $995.00.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
