Ok, this has bugged me for years... the red curbs in the Heights (possibly all of long beach) are tooooo long! So often a car parking space is wasted because of an extra 2-3 feet... now I understand the need for emergency vehicles, but there seems to be more than ample room on all these corners even if the red paint was just a little shorter... and it'd go a long way to improve parking in many areas!
Recent graffiti around Belmont Heights
I've noticed over the past few weeks an increased amount of graffiti around the Heights. Is there something we can do as a community to prevent this from happening and keep our neighborhoods graffiti free?
graffiti
Keep calling the graffiti hoteline to remove .
Call and call and call
Call and call and call plus take pictures and send them to the police with the location
Graffiti
I've thought about grabbing a roller and little paint and going after them myself then I noticed an article in the Times about some Phd candidate doing a paper on getting all kinds of information from the graffiti from learning what the gangs are doing to using it as evidence to get convictions. Now there is some program to do that more than half a dozen cities are involved in.

If it does not appear that the city is responding quick enough to remove graffiti, please give my council office a call (570-6300) and we will follow up to see if we can improve the response time.

Graffiti
Short of making Belmont Heights a "gated community", it is unlikely we can keep out our little graffiti artists. One thing that may help is if the City were more responsive in graffiti removal. I was recently told by our local council person's office that the graffiti removal time was running about 2-3 weeks. Too long!
Red curbs
How about parking in your own drive way, maybe that would free up some parking, But if you do that, someone will park in frort of your house for a week.
Does anybody no the parking rules? I think you can not park a car for more then 3 days ??
3 days is the legal limit
Yes every neighborhood has these violators, You call the city parking enforcement number and they tag the car, If it is not moved within 3 days it gets ticketed. If you do this several times the inconsiderate owner gets the hint. The big problem in the heights is the greedy Apartment owners whom do not provide enough parking spaces for their Tenants. The city in the 70’s didn’t care and let the Real estate barons do as they please. I have one across from me with 63 units and only 69 spaces for these 2 bedroom units. The owner lives in Cota De Caza and is very greedy ,. You can see the problem already, usually 2 bedroom Units have 2 cars, or the Apt Building should have 126 spaces not 69.. This owner purchased this building 20 years ago for around 2 million. His taxes are nothing compared to the other side of the street residential where homes are now selling for around 1 million dollars. This is the plight of Newport Avenue between Colorado and 4 th Street. Read the book “the turning point”… a good example of how to change neighborhoods around for the positive.
Good information and a good book review
Thanks for the information, parking on my street is impacted by the post office they have no onsite parking for personal plus all of the mother in law units now have renters with cars.
Street Parking
It is unfair to blame mistakes of the past (70s) for our parking problems. The apartment building at 259 Euclid was approved to add a 4th unit after 2000, well after the area was changed to an R1. Now they have approved adding over 800 sq ft to this development. All on one lot in a R1 Residential area. The owner does not allow ANY of the residents to park on the property ALL MUST park on our crowded street. Blame lack of zoning and code enforcement! It is still happening! The city does not seam to ever learn.
To the moron who is blaming
To the moron who is blaming the "greedy" apartment owner across the street from his house for Long Beach's parking problems, maybe you should buy yourself a clue.
First of all, the apartments were BUILT TO CODE at the time of their construction. Therefore, if anyone is the blame, it is the drafters of Long Beach's planning / zoning code of 40 years ago for not having enough foresight to predict the parking problem. Is it the owner's fault that the building code of 40 years ago is not to your liking today?
Second, the present owners of these properties are not the developers of the properties anyway, so you're laying blame on someone who bought an existing property 2, 3, 4, 5 owners down the line is pretty stupid.
Third, these apartment buildings, and their tenants, and their cars, have been there for decades - presumably long before you ever moved to Belmont Heights. They were there when you moved in, and you knew about it (or should have) and still decided to buy your property. You probably bought your property cheaper than it would have been if the neighborhood didn't have these ugly, crowded apartments. You made your decision now live with it.
Fourth, this problem is not just in Belmont Heights, or just in Long Beach - it's all over Southern California where old neighborhood streets were redeveloped for higher density in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Glendale, Santa Monica, Burbank, Pasadena, have much of the same.
Personal attacks are NOT tollerated
I have a problem with anonymous posts that are unproductive and antagonistic at best.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I must point out that the original poster at least had the courage to identify them self. I appreciate your post, but do not like the personal attack laced within. I even agree with SOME of what you've said, but find it hard to engage with someone that would call someone else a moron, and hides behind anonymity.
Please don't abuse the fact that BHCA encourages communication by keeping it easy for everyone to post. However, I feel this type of post is VERY unproductive.

Did this person call you a moron ????
Well !!! I was hoping you would keep the post up and the person who did the Post would tell us all how this problem could be fixed. Maybe they should join the BHCA and help with the problem or maybe they own the apartments ??? or maybe they just don't care
