Recent Burglaries

We are fairly new to the neighborhood (Belmont Heights Historic District) and recently three houses were robbed in broad daylight just on the block that we live on. Our vehicle was broken into and prior to that, three other cars were hit in one evening on this block. All this since we have moved in last August. The local police do not seem concerned. Quite the contrary, one officer I spoke to complained that there was not enough crime in this area to keep him from being bored. There seems to be a disconnect.

Is this new for the area? We are concerned and would like to participate in keeping this great neighborhood great.

Now, going out on a limb here with a question as - like I've said - we are new to this particular block: We see some previous posts that bring up the transitional housing. (Sore spot, I know.) Every neighbor that we've met seems very kind and socially conscious. I'm sure nobody is wanting to attack on any level. But we can't help to bring up the question of whether the rise in crime and the opening of the transitional housing has any connection or link in timing. The posts indicate that housing is provided for a number of homeless residents for a period of 2 months and that no other financial assistance, meals or referrals are offered. Without judgement, it would appear to me that there are some needs that aren't being met that some might not have the tools to provide for themselves and creates a bad situation for them and possibly for others that have what they do not. So, without blame or attack, but just a concern for the protection of our safe neighborhood, I guess we're putting the question out to those that have lived here for a while as to what you think is going on and how we might all be part of the resolution. "Better to be part of a solution, than part of the problem"

abandoned shopping carts

While I have not heard of an increase of house or car burglaries recently, where I live has its own unique special problems with transitional housing and that is abandoned shopping carts.  We are located between a supermarket and a transitional housing facility which claims to ban shopping carts from the premises.  So when their residents walk to the market and then walk home with their purchases in a cart, they abandoned the cart a half block or so from the transitional housing facility.  Frequently, in front of my house or across the street is an abandoned shopping cart.   I always take the time to call the supermarket to reclaim their property.  The other day I spoke to the person who picks up the shopping carts for the stores and he said he drives my block every day now.  Sad.  He wouldn't be driving my block daily unless there was money to be made.

I welcome any suggestions to end this blight.

shopping carts

I wonder if we could ask the super market to start using the same type of carts that Target has. The wheel lock up if you go off the property.

shopping carts

The use of shopping carts which are disabled once they go off the market's property is a great idea. Is that something the association could suggest to the local supermarkets?

Burglary Locations

It might be helpful to tell your readers exactly which blocks are having problems.
After all, the burglars know which houses they robbed but we other residents of the Heights do not. We do not need to know the exact addresses but surely some better identification of the problem areas would help us all to maintain extra vigilance.

Burglaries and carts

We moved here 2 years ago. i am surprised to hear about the burglaries. If it's
happening to some areas we should alert everybody so we will know if this problem
is rampant or just isolated to certain areas. We choose this areas because of the
ideal location and low crime statistics. We should all be vigilant and more watchful
of our immediate areas. It's also a good idea to know our neighbors and chat with them
so we know what's going on.

The carts are the responsibility of the stores and I believe that just sending them a letter
regarding this would be taken care of. There's a lot of people that walk to the stores and
we can't blame them if they take the cart. Walmart has been using cart with lock for awhile
but you have to consider the cost.

Thank you and I do hope as one of the post i read that somebody will
say the general area: say between 4th and 5th. ximeno and bennett

burglaries

I don't have any info on burglaries on my block but I will not leave my vehicle on the street overnight because we have a lot of auto break-ins.

I live on 6th Street west of Ximeno...for years the residents on 5th street have been parking on my street because they say the car thefts and break-ins are so bad on 5th....and they feel 6th is safer....but 6th is also bad. I have observed guys, "casing the street at like 5:30 am....have reported to the police but they can't do much.

I would think the best defense is everyone keeping their porch lights on but there are many who apparently don't want to "waste the electricity"...

Burglaries

We were robbed in a home invasion in 1979 (2nd. and MiraMar).Recently I have been thinking of getting a security yard sign which advertises a (non-existent) alarm monitoring system. I also came across this item http://www.norcoalarms.com/ezstore123/CUProductReviewList.asp?productID=1639at Norco Alarms - it is a solar powered night light which illuminates the home security yard sign. After all a fake alarm sign is no good unless the burglar can see it.  I am thinking of buying one but first I am trying to get a cheap security yard sign on E*Bay.
