The image is a snapshot of website statistics for MyBelmontHeights.org. I periodically update it, and occasionally update the explanation as well. I find it interesting to view and thought others would find it interesting as well. Following is an explanation of the numbers used in the graph.
important note: in September the website was attacked by a script that attempted to post spam. Additional security measures were implemented to reduce vulnerability to spambots, but as a result our site is still being hit by these programs, causing statistics to be out of whack with actual visits. I'm hoping that visits by these programs will taper off so that statistics will be more accurate without writing a program to filter out vists by these programs. (don't need/want the extra work).
Unique visitors is the number of "unique" IP addresses that have been to the site during the reporting period.
In the case of May, (only a little more than half month mind you) this gives an idea of how many different computers have visited the site. It is however a little bit misleading, as any single computer may have a different IP address on a different visit depending on their setup & how they access the internet. so the technical stuff behind it can get a bit wacky... what is important to note is the obvious trend that visits &/or repeat visits have been steadily growing.
Number of Visits is simply the raw number of times the site was visited. What's important to note here is February, when we had a lot of advertising for the Forum... you can see that the Number of Visits was high, but the number of unique visits was lower. This tells us that a lot of the visits were the same people (unique visits/IP) checking the site multiple times.
Pages is the number of pages visited on the site. In other words, how many different pages were visited... the higher this number is in relation to Number of Visits gives you an idea of how many pages people typically read once they came to the site. for instance, if number of visits is 100, and Pages is 100 then everyone that came to the site only looked at one page on their visit. if number of visits is 100, and Pages is 300, then on average people visited 3 different pages per visit to the site.
Hits is related to the number of "things" on a page, and isn't very useful for us in determining site usage.
Bandwidth more techie stuff related to how much all this costs. ;-)

What to do with the Data
How can we utilize this data to build a database and contact people for membership, as well as get local businesses to pay for ad space on this site?

useage of website statistics
The data not really useable to build a membership database. There is no identifying information per se. However, it is very useful for understanding site activity.
