Review demolition permits of potentially significant historic buildings

Long Beach City Council meeting ... This week on the Agenda is a proposal for an interim zoning ordinance to require review of all demolition permits for structures greater than 45 years in age be referred to the Housing and Neighborhoods Committee for discussion and recommendation.

Belmont Heights Historic Landmark District Designation Ordinance C-7802

Attached is the Long Beach City Ordinance C-7802 which designates the Location, Description and Characteristics of the Belmont Heights Historic Landmark Disctrict - May 9, 2002.

 

Key Points of the ordinance

    • Seventh Street on the north
    • Fourth Street on the south
    • Newport on the west
    • Roswell on the east
  • Map of district
  • The predominant architectural style of the area is the Craftsman Bungalow. Out of 304 properties surveyed, 206 are contributing Craftsman Bungalows and 125 are pristine unaltered examples. Other contributing architectural styles include: Victorian, Mediteranean and Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Neo-Traditional. Only 37 homes (13%) are non-contributing.

City Ordinance affecting Historical Districts

Here is the link to the city municipal code that established the Cultural Heritage Commission: http://municipalcodes.lexisnexis.com/codes/longbeach/_DATA/TITLE02/Chapter_2_63_CULTURAL_HERITAGE.html It is this section of code that provides for the establishment of Historic Districts among other things. This is important because it essentially sits above a specific historic district ordinance in the hierarchy of code.
