An important mission of the Belmont Heights Community Association (BHCA) is to inform and provide information to our residents about issues in our community. When possible, we also facilitate and encourage participation in decisions affecting our neighborhood and its residents.
One such issue is now before our community.
Recently, LBUSD moved to fully fence-in Fremont Elementary providing additional security for students during school hours but limiting after-school and weekend playground access. Fremont is one of only a few remaining schools in LBUSD left to be enclosed. The BHCA has been contacted by community members who feel strongly against, as well as in favor, of the district’s recent action.
Do you have an opinion about access to the Fremont playground after school hours? If so, on November 6th, at 5:00 PM, the Board of Education (LBUSD) will be discussing the future access to the Fremont playground during non-school hours. This meeting will take place at the Long Beach Unified School District Administration Building located at 1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach. Interested residents are encouraged to attend and must register by 4:30 PM if they wish to speak. Agendas for the LBUSD meetings are released 72 hours in advance.
Prior to the meeting, residents may contact the LBUSD Board directly with comments by emailing LRodriguez@lbschools.net, Board Member Jon Meyer at CJMeyer@lbschools.net, or by calling 562-997-8240.
Additionally, the BHCA has organized a community “Meet and Greet” with the candidates for the 2020 election for the District 4 school board seat. The candidates will make a brief statement and answer questions and concerns. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity and look forward to seeing you at the BHCA January 8th meeting held at the Belmont Heights United Methodist Church at 317 Termino Ave. Social time starts at 6:30 PM; the meeting starts at 7 PM.
