About the Event
Our next BHCA Book Club pick is Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson—a rich, intergenerational story of family, memory, identity, and inheritance.
We can’t choose what we inherit. But can we choose who we become?
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett leaves behind an unexpected inheritance for her two estranged children: a traditional Caribbean black cake and a voice recording. Through her message, Eleanor reveals the haunting story of a young swimmer who fled her island home under suspicion of murder. As her tale unfolds—with secrets, losses, and a long-lost child—Byron and Benny are forced to reconsider everything they thought they knew about their mother, their roots, and each other.
Black Cake is Wilkerson’s debut novel, and it beautifully explores how the weight of history, the silence of untold stories, and the names we carry (or shed) can shape a family for generations.
