Belmont Heights resident Nick Mulvehill, a freshman at Wilson High and dedicated Boy Scout in Troop 698, has made remarkable strides with his Eagle Scout project: the repair, restoration, and lasting protection of Belmont Ave's historic lampposts. We first spotlighted his inspiring initiative in our Fall 2025 issue.

Over the past six months, Nick has delved into the details of what this project requires and made some progress moving it forward. Working with Mark Roberts (acting director of Traffic), the City has received replacement replicas—crafted to closely match the originals for the two lampposts that have been destroyed. These replacements are currently awaiting installation. The remaining 37 lampposts, showing signs of rust, require a fresh coat of paint. The estimated cost for this restoration is $36,500. While the City is unable to fund this work, Councilmember Kristina Duggan (CD3) has offered to attempt to help with the costs of paying for the application for landmarking the lampposts.

Nick is determined to meet this fundraising goal. With support from the BHCA, he is exploring a range of creative avenues: applying for grants (which requires landmarking the lampposts and will be pursued), organizing community fundraisers, and leveraging matching contributions.
