Petition: Save Belmont Avenue's Historic Lampposts

For generations, the distinctive gas lamp-style lampposts along Belmont Avenue have been a cherished part of Belmont Heights' historic character. These elegant fixtures are more than streetlights—they are landmarks in the lives of our neighbors, a reminder of our community's history, and a defining feature of one of Long Beach's most beloved neighborhoods.

Today, many of these historic lampposts are in need of restoration. Without action, this unique piece of Belmont Heights' heritage may be lost.

Residents and community volunteers have stepped forward to raise awareness and seek solutions, but significant barriers remain. Restoration costs have been driven higher by permitting requirements that were designed for major roadway projects rather than simple preservation work such as repainting and restoration.

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Long Beach to:

• Recognize the historic and cultural significance of the Belmont Avenue lampposts.

• Commit to preserving the existing lampposts whenever feasible.

• Explore landmark designation or other appropriate preservation measures that will protect these historic assets for future generations.

• Work collaboratively with residents, community organizations, and preservation advocates to develop a practical restoration plan.

• Review existing permitting requirements and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary costs and administrative barriers for restoration work while maintaining public safety.

  
  

Belmont Heights residents are prepared to do their part. Neighbors are organizing, raising awareness, and seeking funding to help preserve these historic features. We ask the City to partner with us in finding a reasonable path forward.

The historic lampposts of Belmont Avenue are part of what makes our neighborhood special. Once they are gone, they cannot be replaced. By acting now, we can ensure that future generations experience the same sense of place, beauty, and history that these lampposts have provided for decades.
